Title
Avro Petites waist slip, 1968
Description
An Avro Petites waist slip of 1968. Symington's Avro Petites range, cleverly advertised to appeal to the teenage market, treated their potential new customers as adults. The range became an instant success and continued into the late 1960s.
By the middle of the 1950s, the development of the teenage market was becoming increasingly important to the fashion industry. Specially designed underwear was introduced to satisfy the very different needs of younger women.
Symington began by producing matching sets of bras and suspender-belts in pretty colours with attractive decorations. In 1958, they launched their Avro Petities range, cleverly advertised to appeal to the teenage market, treating their potential new customers as adults, rather than children. The range became an instant success and continued into the late 1960s.
This waist slip was part of the Petites range. It was made in one size to fit waists between 23 and 36 inches (58-66 cm). The slip is made from cotton and has a narrow elastic waistband. There is also narrow white lace trimming around the bottom edge. The fabric has been printed with a multi-coloured flower pattern in blues and greens. A matching suspender belt was also available.
