Title
Debenhams suspender belt, c1978
Description
This suspender belt was produced by Symington for the department store, Debenhams, in 1978. Suspender belts were now speciality items, rather than a staple for foundationwear manufacturers.

The use of suspender belts had diminished during the 1960s, largely due to the increasingly popularity of tights as an alternative to stockings. Suspender belts were therefore now speciality items, rather than a staple for foundationwear manufacturers. This particular example was made in one size and was designed as a fun item for the young teenage market.

The suspender belt is made from nylon lace ruched onto a band of narrow elastic. Four narrow suspenders are attached to the belt, each with a small plastic fastening.

Symington not only produced their own ranges such as Avro, Eros and Liberty, they also made products for some of the major retailers of the day, including Marks and Spencer, Dorothy Perkins and Littlewoods.
