Title
Avro maternity corset, 1935
Description
Maternity hookside girdle in drill and plain cotton elastic, 1935. The whole front of the girdle is elasticised and shaped to fit over the abdomen.
It is further supported by three small steels, two at the base of the abdomen and one at the top. The girdle laces at one side and is lightly boned to support the back.
This style is from the first maternity corsets to be produced within the Avro range and provided a basic shape for the next thirty-five years. It continued throughout the Utility period and into the post-war ranges until it was finally discontinued in 1970, when it was replaced by the ultra lightweight maternity pantie girdle.
