Description

L2464 - Taken around 1897, this photograph shows the two girder spans of Brackley viaduct, Northamptonshire. Interestingly, construction of the 755 ft long viaduct ran into some difficulty due to beds of moving clay at this, the southern end. This led to the contractors removing the first two brick arches that had originally been built, and replacing them with this double girder span. To provide increased stability, the third arch was then filled in with bricks to produce a very considerable buttress.
