L2472 - This fascinating picture was taken near Blackbird Road in Leicester, around 1897. Approximately 13 million cubic metres of spoil were excavated during the Last Main Line's construction, and much of it was then heaped across the landscape to form prodigious earthworks such as this. A short distance to the south of here, the embankment gave way to the long blue brick viaduct that carried the Railway for most of its journey across the city.
