A distinctive busk front corset from 1880. It is made from khaki coloured coutil and has a hessian interlining. It has no boning except for under the busk and for the back lacing support. Cotton-corded panels give the corset its shape.
Cording was a highly effective process which became an important feature of many new designs in the late 1880s. Cotton cording involved sewing through the facing cloth, interlining and lining in vertical rows of varying widths. This not only provided the support for the corset, it was also cheaper than using expensive whalebone as support.
