Title
L2478 - Brick buttress at Brackley viaduct, Northamptonshire
Description
L2478 - This photograph is thought to have been taken during the alterations which were made to the Great Central viaduct at Brackley. Interestingly, the viaduct's construction ran into some difficulty due to beds of moving clay at this, the northern end. To increase the structure's stability, the contractor, Walter Scott & Co., bricked up the third arch, before replacing the first two arches with a double girder span. Local folklore suggests the holes were for a clock which was diverted to Woodford Halse en route from the manufacturer. A second brick skin was never added and the holes remained visible until the viaduct was demolished.
