Title
L2314 - Brick arch bridge and contractor's line near Aylestone
Description
L2314 - A single line of well laid contractor's railway passes beneath a three arch brick overbridge near Aylestone, circa 1897. Apparently unaware of Newton's camera, two navvies continue to work at the foot of the cutting. These men would most likely have worked for Topham, Jones & Railton, the firm contracted to build this section of the Last Main Line (Contract No.3, Aylestone to Rugby). Note the contrast between the left side of the cutting, which has been neatly dressed with an even slope, and that on the right, which has yet to be dressed and remains like a spoil tip.
