Woman's Liberty brassiere of 1960, with Velcro closing at the back, underwired cups, and detachable straps.

A white brief bra from the Liberty range. It is part of a small collection of bras which feature a Velcro touch-and-close fastening at the back.

Velcro was a new form of fastening patented by Swiss inventor George de Mestral in the early 1950s. It consists of two facing layers, one of which contains multiple nylon hooks, the other multiple nylon loops. When pressed together, the hooks and loops attach to one another forming a secure fastening, which can only be unlocked by peeling the two sections away from each other.

The bra is underwired and features three-quarter cups made from Broderie Anglaise. The shoulder straps are fully detachable, allowing for a strapless fitting.
