Title
Bust bodice made from Barmen edging, 1915: Detail of fabric
Description
Fabric detail of a meticulously designed bust bodice of 1915, made from forty graded sections of Barmen edging. The bodice is anchored at the waist with a ribbon drawstring and closes at the front with heavy pearl buttons. Narrow cotton lace is used to trim the top edge and around the arms.
Frilled elastic, normally used for suspenders, is inserted down each side of the garment providing comfort and flexibility. The same elastic is also stitched into the shoulders.
A distinctive metal clip is attached to the narrow ribbon at the bottom edge of the bodice. This would have been attached to the busk stud of a corset in order to keep the bodice in place.
