Title
L2337 - Great Central line passing beneath a girder viaduct at Chesterfield
Description
L2337 - A Great Central train moves at speed past Newton's camera as he stands beneath the girder viaduct at Chesterfield. Barely visible beyond the pedestrian bridge at the centre of the photograph is a double span girder bridge that carried another railway over the Great Central tracks. The picture stands as a testament to the rivalry and optimism that characterised Victorian rail expansion, but also to the important place that railways occupied in the lives of British people and their towns. Today, Chesterfield is served only by a single line.
