Title
L2349 - Constructing the viaduct south of Chearsley, Buckinghamshire
Description
L2349 - This is the viaduct which was built to carry the Great Western & Great Central Joint Line over the River Thame, just south of Chearsley, Buckinghamshire. The photograph, taken around 1903, provides something of an insight into bridge construction at the start of the Twentieth Century. Wooden centrings were installed between the piers, and the skin of brick work is laid over the top of these temporary timber frames. After the arches were completed, the parapet and trackbed would then be constructed. Note the line of contractor's railway which has been crudely laid across the river, and the pile of capping stones stacked somewhat precariously on the bank.
