Title
Schools - Henry Kelsey, Master of Cobden Street School, Loughborough
Description
Henry Kelsey, born 1845 in Bakewell, Derbyshire, was a schoolteacher in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Kent in his early career. By 1881 he was living at 45 Moor Lane, Loughborough, with wife Sarah and three sons. By 1891, they had moved to 29a Cobden Street. Henry was an elementary schoolmaster at Cobden Street School, and Sarah an elementary schoolmistress.
By the turn of the century, Henry Kelsey was headmaster of the school, which was built in 1879 and could accommodate 200 boys and 180 girls. It was badly damaged by fire in 1902 and was later rebuilt as a two story building.
This picture probably shows Henry Kelsey during his time as headmaster and would have been taken in the early 1900s. The Kelseys three sons all went to Loughborough Grammar School, and then on to Cambridge. Two became teachers.
