Title
L2354 - Constructing an arch of Hilgrove Road tunnel, London
Description
L2354 - Construction in progress at the entrance to Hilgrove Road tunnel, circa 1897. As the Last Main Line burrowed its way towards the centre of the capital, this scene would have been all too common. Built by J.T. Firbank of London Bridge, Contract No.7 was just two miles long. It was however the most expensive section of the Line to build, as a succession of tunnels and bridges were required before the route could reach its terminus at Marylebone. Here, the temporary wooden centring remains in place as the brick arch nears completion.
