Title
L2373 - Forming the embankment near Rothley, Leicestershire
Description
L2373 - This excellent photograph was taken during the formation of the railway embankment near Rothley, circa 1897. A number of tipping wagons, doubtless filled with earth from a nearby cutting, are brought to the end of the spoil tip where they dump their load to gradually lengthen the embankment. The tracks running down towards the foot of the slope are a line of contractor's temporary railway. Note the locomotive on the far right of the photograph, an engine which almost certainly belonged to Henry Lovatt & Co. of Wolverhampton; the firm responsible for building this section of the Last Main Line (Contract No. 2, Leake to Aylestone).
