Title
L2392 - Steam shovel and navvies working at Westcotes, Leicester
Description
L2392 - A group of navvies pause from their work 'south of Western Road bridge' (S.W.A. Newton's notes), and pose for the camera beside their Ruston steam navvy. The engine's cab is not an original feature, but an improvised structure fashioned from wood and corrugated metal that afforded the men inside some protection from the elements. Note the two women standing at the rear of the cab, and the short lengths of track used to manoeuvre the excavator: surely the crudest example of contractor's temporary railway.
