Title
German corset with detachable bust section, 1922
Description
This back lacing corset with a detachable bust section was made in Germany in 1922. It features a short busk, detachable steel boning, and button front fastening with drawstrings.
The main body of the corset is made from white coutil, has a short busk front and detachable, light, flat steel boning. The bust section is made from cotton poplin, is pleated and has an inverted seam, giving uplift to the bust. It also has a button front fastening with drawstrings at the top and bottom centre, which were used to shape the cups to the wearer's requirements. Each of the ribbon shoulder straps are attached to the top front of the corset by a single button.
This corset provided the foundation for the British-patented busk front corselet produced in 1929, which had an attached bust section and became a standard shape for a number of years.
