Title
L2205 - Building the girder bridge over Northgates
Description
L2205 - Nearing completion, this is the handsome girder underbridge that carried the Last Main Line across Northgates, Leicester. Sitting on the contractor's temporary rails to the left is a steam powered crane. The bridge was built by Henry Lovatt & Co. of Wolverhampton, the firm responsible for Contract No.2 of the London Extension (Leake to Aylestone). Regrettably, this structure was demolished in July 1981, almost twelve years after traffic on this part of the line had ceased.
