Description
Back view of Jenyns corset of 1911, designed in Australia, and one of the first styles to be made under licence by Symington. It features a long, graduated busk, "spirabone" curved supports and four wide, adjustable suspenders.
It is made from white coutil and is low waisted, but deep over the hips. It has a long, graduated busk, "spirabone" curved supports and four wide, adjustable suspenders attached to the bottom. The corset has a distinctive back lacing belt section that was supposed to give "increased ease in every position".
The Jenyns lacing principle concentrated support along and across the lower back, while the front buckles allowed for the back control section to be adjusted, giving greater or lesser support.
Production of the Jenyns' style corset continued for many years and during World War One they were highly recommended for women engaged in war work whom, it was believed, required extra support for their backs.
