Title
L2230 - Great Central Hotel at Marylebone almost completed
Description
L2230 - Shrouded in scaffolding and bearing the promise of 'all the latest sanitary improvements', this is the nearly completed Hotel Grand Central, the magnificent showpiece of the London Extension's terminus at Marylebone. The building was designed by R.W. Edis, and in accordance with late Victorian standards it was a lavishly decorated and beautifully executed piece of craftsmanship. Interestingly, the Great Central Company themselves were unable to build the hotel due to insufficient funds. Sir John Blundell Maple, the furniture magnate, purchased the site on the understanding that a hotel was to be built there, and duly obliged with this marvellous testament to the golden age of railways.
