Title
L2409 - Westgate Station, Rotherham
Description
L2409 - Thought to have been photographed around 1900, this is the Midland Railway's station at Westgate, Rotherham. It was the terminus station of the Sheffield and Rotherham Railway, which opened in 1838 and ran in isolation for 18 months until the North Midland line arrived. It was then absorbed into the Midland. The first station building was across the end of the line, situated on Westgate at its junction with Main Street. However, that building was sold c.1870 to the Post Office and this photo is the second station which was alongside the line, situated on Main Street. It was constructed of wood, referred to locally as the Rabbit Hutch, and was closed on 6 October 1952.
