The Newarke Gateway (known as the Magazine), stands at the corner of Newarke Street, Vaughan Way and Oxford Street. it was built around 1400 as an impressive gateway to the south suburbs. and was also accommodation for the porter. In the 16th century it was used as a prison, and in the 17th century as a gunpowder and arms store.
