This statue of Robert Hall was built by sculptor J B Philip in 1871. The Reverand Robert Hall (2 May 1764 - 21 February 1831) was a Baptist preacher, born in Arnesby near Leicester. He was well known as an orator, writer, and advocate for the freedom of ideas.
In this photograph the Square has been converted into an allotment- likely dating this photograph to World War 2.
