An illustration of the Great Hall inside Leicester Castle. The Hall was built around 1150 and still retains some of its 12th century timberwork. This image is a reproduction of a 1821 painting by the architect Henry Goddard.
The original part of Leicester Castle was built around 1070. Although originally used as a residence, it gradually became more used as a courthouse.
