Cavendish bridge spans the River Trent on the Leicestershire/Derbyshire border. A series of heavy floods in the Middle Ages altered the course of the river, so many former bridges were destroyed. Due to increasing traffic becoming too much for the ferry service to handle, a bridge was proposed. Cavendish bridge was designed by the architect James Paine, and opened in 1760. The bridge collapsed during a major flood in March 1947.
