1/4 Glass plate negative
The Palace Theatre on Belgrave Gate, Leicester city centre, was built on the site of the former Floral Hall. The theatre itself opened on Monday 17th June 1901. With a seating capacity of 3,500, it was (at the time) the largest theatre outside of London. The theatre went into decline in the 1950s and finally closed on 21st February 1959. The building was demolished shortly after.
'The King And I' (seen advertised on the sign above the door) was the last show held at the theatre. This likely indicates that this photograph dates to January/February 1959.
