Title
Taylor Street Ash Pit
Description
The ash pit on Taylor Street, in the St Matthews area. This was a communal ash pit that served 16 nearby homes. The midden was emptied once a month. On 7th February 1899, when the pit was emptied, a body of a 6 year old boy- Charles Alson- was found. The boy had gone missing a month before. His being in the pit was a mystery; he had either fallen into the recently emptied pit and been unable to climb out, or had been the victim of foul play.
