Title
Whitwick Pit Disaster
Description
Relatives watch as horse drawn hearses arrive to collect the bodies of some of the miners who perished in the Whitwick Pit Disaster, 19th April 1898. A fire started in the Number Five shaft, trapping many miners inside. Of the 42 people working that shift, only 7 survived. The youngest victim was 13 years old, a boy who drove the pit ponies. Many of the bodies were unretrievable due to the danger, and remain forever buried in the mine. The site of the disaster is now the Whitwick Retail Park.
