Title
L3368 - Girder overbridge spanning contractors tracks
Description
L3368. This long plate girder overbridge is believed to be in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, and spans three contractor's tracks. Chunks of wood can be seen most clearly under tracks belonging to the far right line, which rises to the cutting side. These existed to prevent the tracks from moving out of position - a function fulfilled by steel clamps in permanent lines.
Another temporary feature is the water tower just beyond the bridge to the left of the tracks - this enabled contractors to maintain the steam pressure of their locomotives. Tell- tale plumes of smoke rising over the embankment indicate a contractors locomotive disappearing from, or about to nudge into view. Work on this section of track formed part of the widening and renovation operation carried out on Great Western lines between 1901 and 1905, after the collaborative agreement with the Great Central.
