Title
L3358 - Bradenham Manor House
Description
L3358. This photograph is one of a collection taken by S. W. A. Newton depicting various facets of rural life. It shows a 17th century manor house in Bradenham, around four miles north west of High Wycombe. The building was made of red brick and had tall sash windows, steep tiled roofs with small dormer windows and a row of slender brick chimneys. It contains elements of an original building of 1540, built by the second Lord of Windsor, who held seat at the estate. Queen Elizabeth I was entertained by the third Lord Windsor at this older manor house in 1566. The 17th century rebuilding is thought to have been carried out by Sir Edmund Pye and his wife Catherine, whose coat of arms appear inside the house. Further renovations had been made to the house by the time Newton visited the manor, notably by Isaac Disraeli, father to the future Prime Minister, Benjamin, who rented the house for a period during the 19th century.
