Title
Disabled Warriors Bazaar, 1917
Description
Photograph taken during the Lord Mayor's Fund for Leicester and Leicestershire Disabled Warriors Bazaar, an event to raise money for the wounded veterans of the First World War. Taken on the opening day of the gathering, 24 May 1917, the image shows several attendees gathered around the Leicester Mercury stand. This was one of 60 such booths set up by local businesses and artisans for the event, which was held in the Junior Training Hall, Leicester. Although the turnout was not as grand as had been hoped for, a total of over £18,000 was nonetheless raised, with the first and last days proving the most popular. The final day alone saw a contribution of over £3,000, which was in large part due to the presence of the stage favourite Vesta Tilley, music hall star and "male impersonator". Although dominated by ladies with an array of interesting hats, careful study of the photograph will also reveal the presence of two men in uniform: the late Earl Kitchener, iconic face of the "Britons: Lord Kitchener Wants YOU" recruitment poster, and a very lively Boy Scout.
