Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet pendant
Description
Oval gold pendant with Cabochon garnet. These objects are a feature of the conversion period, with several often on one necklace.

Early Anglo-Saxon to Middle Anglo-Saxon ~ 600 to 700 AD

This is simple but large pendant was found in Shepshed, Charnwood. It would have been worn as one of many decorations on a string of beads, rather than on a necklace like we might today.

Notes
Oval gold pendant with grooved attachment set with cabochon garnet. The plain backplate is framed by two beaded wire cables into which a plain, upright border is set. The garnet is chipped in one place and has some pitting on the front. The upright frame is cracked and bent away from the stone in the upper part, near the loop.
