Title
Boy On Fowler Tractor
Description
Old Hayes "S. Neale" - boy in uniform riding tractor in farmyard
Celluloid negative
07/09/1952
Negatives collection. Leicestershire Leicester and Rutland Record Office
The Fowler tractor was produced by John Fowler & Co Engineers, who also produced railway locomotives. The large flywheel on the side was powered by the single cylinder engine. Rather than a key, these tractors were started up by inserting a shotgun-style cartridge containing a smouldering piece of paper infused with saltpetre, which provided the charge to start the engine.
