Title
Gilmorton Brooch
Description
A medieval silver-gilt annular brooch with stone settings and rouletted ornament. Found near Gilmorton with a metal detector.

A thirteenth century, circular brooch decorated with eight semi-spherical bosses separated by spacers. Four of the bosses carry rouletted ornament and one of these is pierced in the centre to accomodate the hook of the pin. The corresponding boss has a recess serving as the pin rest. The pin itself is missing. The remaining four bosses are plain with settiings for stones. Two stones remain (possibly garnets) and two are missing. The bosses are arranged so that the stones appear intermittently at each quarter of the frame.

This is a silver-gilt annular brooch set with rounded pink stones, probably amethysts, found in Harborough. Gemstones symbolised various attributes, so the choice would be loaded with meaning.
