Title
L2254 - Constructing the girder bridge over the River Trent
Description
L2254 - Photographed on 3.10.1896, this is the large girder bridge that was built to take the Last Main Line across the Trent. A forest of temporary wooden frames supports the infant structure whilst the piers are constructed. The sleepers on the far right of the picture are part of the temporary bridge which carried a line of contractor's railway over the river. Note the distinctive outline of a steam crane at work on the far end of the bridge. Logan & Hemingway was the firm responsible for building this section of the railway (Contract No.1, Annesley to Leake).
