Title
L1810 - Blacksmiths shop at Mowmacre Hill, Leicester
Description
L1810 - Taken at a contractor's depot around 1897, this photograph shows the blacksmith's shop in Mowmacre Hill, Leicester. Together with the huge numbers of men working with pick and shovel, many so-called navvies were actually skilled workmen. Blacksmiths, steel erectors, bridge builders, miners, enginemen and brick layers were among the many tradesmen that contractors needed to employ in order to complete the demanding and complex engineering works required for railway construction.
