Title
L1832 - Steam navvy at work in a cutting near East Leake
Description
L1832 - A Ruston steam powered excavator working at a cutting near East Leake, Nottinghamshire, circa 1897. Forty three of these powerful 'steam navvies' were used during the construction of the Last Main Line. Rather poignantly, a single navvy sits with his wheel barrow, looking on as the machine does its work. On the left of the picture is a typically undulating section of contractor's temporary railway.
