Title
L1679 - Construction of Leicester Central Station
Description
L1679 - Great Central Station 'portico with workmen', Leicester on 28th January 1899 (S. W. A. Newton's notes). The stations on the London Extension were among the final parts of the Line to be constructed, and less than two months after this photograph was taken, the Line's first express passenger train left Marylebone. These navvies would have worked for Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton, the contractor responsible for building this section of the Railway (Contract No.2, Leake to Aylestone).
