Title
L1692 - Saunderton Tunnel pilot bore
Description
L1692 - The construction of the Great Western & Great Central Joint Railway required the boring of a new tunnel at Saunderton in Buckinghamshire. He we see the pilot bore being excavated in the roughly dug out cutting. Loaded and empty tipping wagons stand on the contractor's rails outside the tunnel bore, while several 'pit-props' lean against the tunnel mouth. The tunnel was built by Mackay & Davies of Cardiff between 1901 and 1905, as part of the alternative route into London.
