Title
L1778 - Steam crane pictured at Staverton, Buckinghamshire
Description
L1778 - Steam crane at work on Staverton viaduct, Northamptonshire, circa 1897. In total, it is thought that around fifty of these cranes were used during the construction of the Last Main Line. Although originally built without cabs of any kind, contractors quickly improvised, and with wood and corrugated metal they produced makeshift shelters, of which this is a typical example. On the left of the photograph is a section of contractor's temporary railway.
