Title
L1544 - Contractor's railway and broken wagon
Description
L1544 - Broken wagon lying by the contractor's railway at a cutting near Birstall, Leicester, circa 1897. The speed at which the contractors worked meant that these temporary rails, which were laid to bring men, materials and machinery to and from the construction sites, were notorious for being poorly laid and maintained. As a result there must have been many mechanical failures and derailments. Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton built this section of the Railway (Contract No.2, Leake to Aylestone).
