Title
L1553 - 0-6-0 Contractor's locomotive and tipping wagons, Birstall, Leicester
Description
L1553 - 0-6-0 Contractor's saddle tank locomotive (possibly built by Manning Wardle of Leeds) and tipping wagons at Birstall Park Estate, Leicester, circa 1897. Ninety four contractor's engines were used during the construction of the London Extension. They were an indispensable asset, shunting and hauling thousands of wagons over tracks that were often poorly laid and maintained. Henry Lovatt was the contractor responsible for building this stretch of the Line (Contract No.2, Leake to Aylestone).
