Title
L1554 - Steam crane and navvies working at Northolt, Middlesex
Description
L1554 - Steam crane and navvies, thought to be working on the Neasden to Northolt section of the Line, built by T. Oliver & Son between 1901 -1905. The arching at the centre of this industrious scene is part of the construction of a cut and cover tunnel. Both steam cranes and steam shovels were built without shelters for the men who worked them, however most contractors fashioned a wooden or metal cab that afforded the navvies a small amount of comfort. This machine is more unusual then for appearing without this modification.
