Title
The Members Of The Club
Description
'The Club' was an offshoot of the Leicester Literary And Philosophical Society. After a very agreeable supper party in May 1860 the attendees decided to form their own club, meeting up to discuss topics without prejudice: "the utmost freedom should be given to the expression of opinion, and there should be no limit other than that prescribed by good taste". Club members could express their opinions, no matter how controversial, as "Club friendship was proof against all outdoor quarrels". The Club became not just an intellectual meeting but a group of true friends.

The last meeting of The Club was in 1886. In 1909 the last surviving member- Charles Coe, deposited the meeting minutes at the Museum, and they are now held by the Record Office. In the record book he wrote: "We all stand registered on our Cup, side by side, enshrined
in everlasting silver. Men so opposed in theories but such faithful friends in heart...who meet to please ourselves and our liberty is unfettered."

The Club's motto was 'This Must Not End Here' - a quote from the founding supper- which summed up the friendship of the members.
