Title
L3456 - Thurland Street Tunnel
Description
L3456 - This photograph is taken peering under the north arch of Thurland Street tunnel. The structure's facade appears complete, and supportive wooden beams can be seen beyond the portal. At this stage permanent lines had not yet replaced two contractor's tracks. Measuring 100 yards in length, the tunnel was positioned to the north of Weekday Cross junction and directly south of Victoria Station. Compared to other tunnels leading under Victoria Street, this section had little rock cover, and was constructed with relative ease and inexpense by contractors Logan and Hemmingway, using a 'cut and cover' technique.
