Title
L3453 - Paddy Mail transporting navvies to work
Description
L3453 - This photograph shows a navvy train, or 'paddy mail' ferrying a group of men to work on the railways. This open topped structure was towed along tracks by a contractors' locomotive. The man second from left is smoking tobacco from a clay pipe which was known as a gum bucket. Smoking was an activity partaken in by all sections of the navvying community, be they men, women, girls or boys.
