Title
L3469 - Interior of St. Mary Magdalene Church, Hucknall
Description
L3469 - This view of the interior of St Mary Magdelene's church looks towards the chancel. Like much of the church it had been rebuilt in the late 19th century, partly due to the developmentof a colliery population necessitating increased church room. The building contains an impressive collection (the largest in the UK) of stained glass windows from the studios of C.E. Kempe, described by some as the greatest of the Victorian stained glass artists. One such example is the east window, here obscured by bright sunlight. It depicts (from top to bottom) Christ reigning in majesty, the crucifixion, and the deposition from the cross. Interestingly, it has been noted that one of the disciples pictured in a peripheral scene bears striking resemblance to Byron, who is buried at the church.
