L1575 - Navvy Mission hut at Catesby, Northamptonshire
Description
L1575 - Inside a navvy mission hut at Catesby, Northamptonshire. Although by the 1890s navvies had lost some of their reputation for violence and ungodly behaviour, Victorian moralists still considered them to be in need of religious guidance. To this end, the Navvy Mission Society provided purpose built rooms such as this, where both the 'message' and the furnishings were simple and uncompromising. Navvies using this mission would probably have worked for T. Oliver & Son, the contractor responsible for building this section of the Railway (Contract No.4, Rugby to Woodford).
