L3459 - The Great Central's policy was for bridges to be brick built wherever possible, as no provisions had to be made for their upkeep. However, in places where long distances had to be spanned it was necessary to use steel girder. This was especially the case in urban centres like Leicester and Nottingham, which were already highly developed and populated by the time of the London Extension's construction. To enable tracks to pass through the heart of the city, they were elevated above busy streets below on numerous purpose built bridges and viaducts. This steel girder overbridge crossing Arkwright Street, Nottingham, is a case in point. It passes over a cobbled road with horse and cart, enclosed by rows of shops. Men and women in unmistakably Victorian attire go about their daily business, undeterred by the railroad above.
