Title
L3475 - Residential street in Loughborough
Description
L3475 - This lively scene shows a group of people in a residential street near to Loughborough's Gas Works. A number of men are dressed smartly in suits and hats, whilst the boys wear the short trousers typical of the period. The ladies are sombrely attired in long coats and hats. Note the child in a pram towards the back of the photograph - prams, or 'perambulators' did not appear until the last decade of the 19th century, and initially had the appearance of miniature bath chairs. Another feature typical of the period is the advert painted high on the wall of the end of terrace house. The second most significant manufacturing and marketing town in the county, Loughborough was heavily involved in the textiles industry during the 1800s. The Great Central Railway was introduced to the town in the last years of the century, by which stage the area was being served by the Midland Railway, and the Charnwood Forest Railway, worked by the London and North-Western Railway Company.
